The Cane Institute serves as the epicenter for STEM education and technology transfer for A.D. Henderson & FAU High School. The Institute’s integrated approach to solving society's toughest problems engages the best and brightest students, faculty, and resources at A.D. Henderson & FAU High School to explore today's most complex challenges in arenas such as cybersecurity, autonomous vehicles, robotics, virtual reality, augmented reality, automation and artificial intelligence.

One of our lead clubs is the MATE ROV Competition team. The MATE ROV Competition is an underwater robotics (aka remotely operated vehicle or ROV) challenge that engages a global community of learners each year. This year, the MATE ROV Competition is highlighting the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development and inspiring our global community to embrace environmental, social, and governance (ESG) efforts to create a sustainable future on our ocean planet. The competition challenges each team to design and build an ROV and the necessary sensors and tooling to support work to combat climate change, provide clean energy, feed our growing global population, monitor ocean health, preserve our maritime history, and "deliver, together, the ocean we need for the future we want!"
This year the upperclassmen team (Night Owls) placed 2nd in the Florida Regional MATE Championship. Our freshmen team (Sea Owls) tied for 3rd place at the same tournament.

How you can help our Underwater Robotics team

The accomplishments that these young students have made take hard work, effort and resources. Unfortunately, a program like the underwater robotics program is not a standard part of the school curriculum, and therefore not funded by the school. As a result, the large majority of this program's funding must be generated from the students, their parents, and the support and generosity in the community.

The competitions that these students participate in are an opportunity for these young men and women to challenge themselves against other students from around the world! Your generous support will help us to cover the cost of our travel to the world championship - transportation, hotels, meals, team apparel, and spare parts for our underwater robot. A donation of any amount helps our students hone their craft and become the best that they can be.

Thank you in advance for your support. We really appreciate it!

A Message From Allan Phipps

I am so excited to keep competing for the MATE ROV team at A.D. Henderson and FAU High School. We've had a lot of success in the past, and I can't wait to try our luck against the best teams in the world!

One of our first challenges however is to raise enough money to maintain the activities of the underwater robotics program. Our coach has challenged each of us to raise at least $1000 -- but more would be even better! If you would be willing to help me out with a donation I would really appreciate it.

Thanks again for thinking of me and I hope to make you all proud of me as me and my teammates as we compete at the MATE ROV World Championship!
